Event gamemode - Climate Change
This might not be too historically accurate, but it'll be interesting to play with (but maybe a little too complex). So in this gamemode, there will be different Biomes and Natural Disasters with a whole range of effects.
For example, there could be:
Flooded zones: This applies to the coastal areas. In areas that are Fully Flooded, only transport ships can move across them, so ground units and other naval vessels cannot go. In Partially Flooded area, ground units get a speed and damage debuff.
Avalanche zones: Applies to some Mountain areas. In these areas, avalanches could happen randomly, which block off roads and deal 1 instance of heavy damage to units and buildings in its path.
Wildfire zones: Applies to some Forest areas. Here, wildfires could break out randomly and spread outwards in random direction and speed, as well as dissipate after a random amount of time. Units caught in wildfires take Damage Over Time until they leave the wildfire area. Buildings also take DOT.
Blizzard zones: Applies to cold places in real life. Similar to wildfires but with a twist. Buildings still take DOT, but units only take DOT when they are outside the provincial centres (so if they stay put they'll be unharmed). Movement speed and visibility will also be reduced.
Hurricanes: Applies to Ocean. Hurricanes will form randomly in Ocean areas and move in a random direction. Ships will take DOT while in the hurricane (but not in the Eye, so people could launch sneak attacks through it), and planes can't fly in it. Visibility will also be reduced.
These are just what I thought of, but there's more like Droughts, Tornadoes, Heat Waves, etc.
