Fortification Cost

I commonly find myself wanting to build fortifications, but it simply costs way to much steel to ever be worth it. I think it should be lowered to 2,000 or maybe even 1,500 rather than 3,000. I think that to make up for this price change, you could extend the build time, but fortifications can be a very important part of determining battle strategy, and they are not being utilized as they should be. Lets think about this in logical terms, you could either build level 5 fortification for 15,000 metal, or you could produce 6 medium tanks. Nobody is ever going to spend 15,000 total to help defend a single province, so I think that this price should be lowered.

Regarding battle strategy, fortifications provide great defense from many types of attacks, and there are a few ways to bypass the casualties of invading a fortified territory by land. One is using tactical bombers, and the other is with artillery. This can really change the entire strategy of the opponent and it will provide a defense advantage.

I personally think that fortifications are being greatly undervalued, and this is highly due to their extreme cost. Imagine you are trying to defend a big line of land and say it is about 10 provinces in length with the border of the enemy. In order to get level one fortification along the whole line, that would cost 30,000 metal and 10,000 supplies. Now if the enemy wanted to, he could pile up and plow through one less defended province (due to the massive cost of fortification, there are less troops to defend the line) and once he has punctured through the line there is no point in attacking the rest of the line, because he already has a pathway into your country, and the value of the border could have bought you about 20 tactical bombers to completely obliterate the enemy.

Just think back to the last time you even bothered building any fortification, and when you did, how little it helped you. If it was cheaper, then it would be much more worth the cost, but right now it needs to change so that players can get their defense advantage back, and not have to worry about piling up as many troops on their border as possible.

This is a confused and contradictory post. On the one hand, you argue that fortifications are valuable. But then you argue that it costs too much. This is absurd.

In life, many things are valuable. They all take effort and hard work. The cost of fortifications is not too high, and if they cost less metal to build, players would build fortifications all over the place and this would ruin game balance and wreck the game.

Yes, fortifications are useful if built intelligently as you argue. That is exactly why they cost so much to build, because once you fortify a spot, it is very difficult and costly for an opponent to take.

Yes, but the current cost, I believe is way too discouraging and if the price was lowered then more players would use it. I am not saying it needs to be half the price, but I am proposing that the cost be taken down from 3,000 metal. 2,500 would be much better. I think players need to use fortifications more often because it would change up the fundamental strategy of the game and make it more realistic.

2,500 is not that much of a drop, so I could live with that. Still, if it came to a vote, I would prefer to stick to 3K. You are right that dropping that cost would change up the fundamental strategy, but this is not a change that I would enjoy to be honest. It would encourage people to turtle up and fortify and I prefer having the game more mobile because I find it more exciting.

Well, first of all, economy is a huge part of the game. If you have a well run economy, it's rather cheap. Second, you barely NEED a level five fortification. Only build them up to level 5 in VERY weak points. I usually bring them up to level 2-3, maybe 4. Unless I have a weak point against a really powerful enemy, I never build it up to level three. I made a guide to economy here. Resource Production

I use fortifications a lot--I just never splurge. I agree, it's a huge part of strategy. Once, two fortifications allowed me to win a war I was losing. That was one of the few times I used level 5 forts. I made a final stand in two provinces. They each had level five fortifications. I had a bunch of troops there and I destroyed half their army. It put them in shambles and allowed me to quickly push back.

Very true. You cannot just build randomly. Also, let me pull up some stats.

At level five, damage is reduced by 75 percent. That's a huge decrease, so may even argue that it's OP. Of course it's expensive. If I could just spam them, it would be VERY annoying to the other side.

In my current game, the only real opponent I had was so pissed when he lost that he stacked ALL his troops into one city and built it up to level 5, just to be annoying. Took me a lot of rockets to break that down, but I tried to take it positively, and am using that to work towards the Rocket-builder achievement and get some gold out of it.

That's my point. Imagine that on a larger scale.
