I think a great new addition to making the game more realistic would be to add built-in Anti-Air and Artillery Fire to Fortresses. An owned Fortress could have added abilities based on the level of the Fortress.
Fortress Level 1
-- Short range artillery function with strength of 1 level 2 Artillery Gun
Fortress Level 2
-- Short range artillery function with strength of 2 level 2 Artillery Guns
-- Anti-air function with strength of 1 level 2 Anti-Air Gun
Fortress Level 3
-- Mid range artillery function with strength of 2 level 3 Artillery Guns
-- Anti-air function with strength of 2 level 3 Anti-Air Guns
Fortress Level 4
-- Mid range artillery function with strength of 2 level 4 Artillery Guns
-- Anti-air function with strength of 3 level 4 Anti-Air Guns
Fortress Level 5
-- Long range artillery function with strength of 3 level 5 Artillery Guns
-- Anti-air function with strength of 3 level 5 Anti-Air Guns
In addition, this would incentivize more Fortress construction and help to prevent total destruction of inexperienced players in the face of the very experienced (like myself) or the gold spenders. This would not seem to be too difficult to add to the code and the numbers could be tweaked.
Of course, the artillery function would have to operate the same as artillery when the enemy has reached it which -- in this case -- would mean that the artillery function would stop upon an engaged battle. Also important would be that the fortress would need to automatically fire on the closest land threat first then, when all land threats in range are gone, it fires on naval threats in range.
To sum up:
Fort Level.....Artillery.....Anti-Air
Fort 1..........S.1.2..........0.0
Fort 2..........S.2.2..........1.2
Fort 3.........M.2.3..........2.3
Fort 4.........M.2.4..........3.4
Maybe this idea is a little too complicated, but I'm open to alternative suggestions along the same lines. BUT, the suggestions must employ Fortresses or a separate structure to be built that would add this functionality to a fortress.
Fort 5.........L.3.5..........3.5

Perhaps range would be set the same as the equivalent range of the corresponding artillery research. Also, the artillery and anti-air research might need to be done for the Fortress to have the capabilities. Or maybe any fortress's strength of AA and Arty is dependent on current research while the level of the Fortress determines the equivalent number of the current arty and AA units that are built-in.

Interesting suggestion.

I remember that the old Microprose game "Colonization" had fortresses that would fire on nearby ships that got too close. It's probably what inspired this idea. But mostly, I just want to see the Fortress do more than just sit there and look pretty.
Perhaps occupancy could increase the effect (or lack thereof decrease it) by a percentage. Maybe Militia can increase the artillery function and Infantry increases the AA function. Maybe Artillery stationed at a Fortress get a higher accuracy such that their offensive power increases by a percentage based on the level of the Fortress AND whether it is manned with support troops (infantry or militia). AA Guns could take this into account. Come to think of it, even Anti-Tank guns could get an additional defense bonus from having support troops stationed at the Fortress too.
I guess what I really want to see is that the Fortress gets some more Chutzpah and maybe the defensive guns and artillery gets an additional bonus from accompanying support.
Let's make a Fortress into a FORTRESS!!!
If nothing else, maybe have separate buildings that would enhance the Fortress in some of these ways.
Also, since I'm on a roll, what if defensive guns and artillery got an additional stationary defensive bonus for "digging in". In other words, after setting in place for more than six hours, they start to get an additional defensive bonus per every three hours (i.e. 5% per hour) upto an addional 25% on top of their regular defensive bonus and any Fortress bonus they may be sitting on. But this digging in bonus would need to apply anywhere they sit for six hours or more regardless of being on a control point or not.

It's good idea.
