No matter what I do, at some point I have overwhelming NPC’s attacking me on multiple fronts. Impossible to defend. So if you people running this game ever decide to fix this stupidity, send me an e-mail and I might start playing again. Until then it is just pointless.

At the start of the game, set your diplomatic relation to all AI to RoW/Shared map, maybe excluding any in close proximity to you that you intend to invade. This will give you a big boost in popularity, so AI are a lot less likely to declare war down the line. Then, make sure every time you go to war with a player country you declare war first, this also helps improve reputation. Lastly, first set a trade embargo on any AI you intend to invade and then declare war after that, as this also helps. Being at war with an unpopular player nation can boost your popularity too, as well as trading with AI in the newspaper. Perfidious acts of war (not declaring war), not taking advantage of AI start game relations and not trading lead to constant AI war declarations.
Although there is only so much you can do, I find it's a lot less of a problem on the 100 player world map, mainly an issue playing on the 1939 Historical map, especially as the USSR.

AI countries are easy to fight, once you understand how they work.
Often, the reason players have issues with AI is because they spread in all directions, without regard to the length of their border. Another reason is troop losses, resulting in empires that look large but don't have any teeth. The same situation that would result in a loss against skilled human opponents.

Regardless, this mechanic turns a lot of people off. In particular, players that are active enough to get to this point and might otherwise continue playing the game.

skill issue
use arty to lure the ai units then use mot inf to get behind the frontlines

I think this is a very minor issue in the game tho
once you are skilled enough you will know how AI attack mechanics works. addionally, you can be a better dimplomat by 1) declaring war before attacking and 2) giving the right of the way to all Ai at the begining of the game.
this will somehow decrease your negative popularity accross the nations.

Or just kill them early, consolidate before you move on, keep your borders short, maintain a rapid reaction force in reserve. Don't expect to start in Spain, ignore Portugal, spread into Poland, leave your core undefended, and expect to survive. Either the AI will take over Portugal and attack you, or another player will land in Portugal and use it as a staging area to invade you.

I agree with the others. This is a minor problem in the game. AI aren’t intended to be a problem and most players quickly learn how to over them with ease.
I’ve considered many other problems with the game to be a worth quitting over, like the increase of heavy golders. AIs declaring war on me is minor.

That's the main problem players face when playing the German Empire. They ignore the AI near them, ie, Danzig, Slovakia, Ireland and the AI declares war. Best thing is the RoW/Share map at the start with AI

According to a thread I was part of a few months ago, this would seem to be in doubt. The consensus was that any difference it makes is negligible.

This is myth in the current version! It has worked like this in the past, but currently there are no penalties for abrupt negative changes in diplomatic relations, EVEN including just starting to fire at troops without any formal war declaration.

The trick is to take out the Bots earlier on, as zoom said. You gotta kill them before they get too strong. As soon as someone goes inactive, you need to kill them before the AI spam comes back to bite you in the future. You also need to move fast and try to win before the AI even has the chance to make a huge horde.

No, kill potential inactive countries before bots. If the ai takes them over they can be 5x more powerful than a normal ai.

Wow I'm very surprised that this isn't a thing anymore, I guess that makes things a little simpler.

My bad I meant that too. When you know some country is an AI you have to kill them early on. Basically kill any and all bots ASAP.

Taking out 2 player countries by day 5-6 is a good strategy on any map.

Actually that's a bit slow, but yeah, the gist is right.

Yes, ideally you wanna get there by day 4ish, but sometimes you have to deal with noob rushes and resource shortages.
P.S. Day 1 noob rushes are VERY easy to counter, just play defensively and stack your units.

I always get noob rushed by Egypt as Syria. It’s very nice because it gives me free land. Though it slowly me down since usually I can take Iraq over before the day is even over-provided I don’t have to deal with an Egyptian noob rush. Either way being in the middle of many other countries may seem hard but if they aren’t smart it becomes free land!

Hey, no reason to turn down free land!
I like it when two countries near me are fighting and killing each other's units, and then I can swoop in for ez win.

I was on the receiving end when I had killed Egypt and Iraq at a heavy cost and was overrun by Persia. Thankfully I think they were killed eventually, damn bastards!
