Infantry upgrading problem

so, recently i lost half of resources because the upgrading troops mechanic changed. Normally after i upgrade i would immediatly attack, which the unit would do after upgrading, but this time there was a cancel upgrade box wwith yes or no, but since i wanted to upgrade i said no.

So i decided to try add target, which somewhat worked untill i missed a city and gave a huge chance of my enemy reclaiming his lands, so i tried to somehow undo it but i couldnt, and then i accidentally made the cancel upgrade box pop up again and accidentally cancelled the upgrade. And i lost most of my god damn resources. Why didnt i get the resources back? I know in the cancel upgrade box warned that i could lose all the resources i spent, but still, its very lazy that they couldnt just program it so it gives back the resources.

In short; i accidentally lost all my resources and now im pissed at bytro.
