I have got an idea, what if you make it so that when you trade materials to other players then you actually need to have transports ships or planes ready to go and actually need to transport the goods via sea, air or land.
And you actually need special harbors and airports and maybe truck stations to take or send the materials. So then you can actually block a country to make it starve.

Sounds good, but developer would have to add lots of coding and possibly new units and facilities ... And apparently they are having server problems that can not handle current load of games - my games been crashing often after 15-30 minutes of play these last few weeks ... 
I like the idea, but it would make the game much more complicated, and it is already difficult for new players to learn all of the game mechanics. That is why I vote maybe.
This has been suggested before...but it would make the game too complicated, so I vote no.
