New Unit Proposal - Support Forces

My brother and I have been cooking up more ideas recently, and we recently got an interesting idea from someone.

We could have units which boost other units. For egzample, pilots could boost the speed or power of aircrafts (if in the same division or group as aircrafts). Marines could boost the speed and power of ships (same as with aircrafts only if in the same division)

Jacob and I realized something upon reading this, and that is the fact that there is an entire series of forces that are unrepresented in this game from WWII, and that is the support forces. These are the forces in WWII that were not used for direct combat, but could be considered the "unsung heroes" of the War in some cases. So, after talking it over, here are the ideas my brother and I came up with for these units and their potential stats:

(Please Note; we will likely be doing this in multiple posts or threads, because we'll be covering multiple types of units here).

-First off, for this to be the most efficient, we believe that a new research category would be necessary to introduce these units, to reflect the fact that they are mostly non-combat support units. The name of the Category would be, "Support".

-Second, all units discussed here would have low hp and little to no attack stats.

-Third, all units mentioned would require fairly medium costs to produce, but would be very quick to produce.

  1. Combat Engineers - Ground Support Unit

  • Purpose would be to repair buildings and reinforce defensive structures/positions; buildings would recover some hp each day an engineer is present, and would boost building speed by 5%-15%.
  • Would range from Level 1 to Level 3, researchable starting at day 7-8.
  • If traveling with armies, they would provide a minor defensive boost, between 10%-20%, depending on level, but not while at sea. This bonus would only apply while stationary.
  • Could possibly repair units with a Hard Armor Class, about 5% per day.
  • Would not possess an attack stat, and would have a low defense stat against all other units (no less than 1.0)
  • Would have a terrain bonus of 25% in cities, and mountains.
  • Speed would be faster than militia, but slightly slower than infantry (about 20-22km/h)
  • Would require an upkeep similar to militia, but with higher manpower cost.
  • Would belong to the Infantry armor class.
  • Would require at least a level 2 Barracks to create, no factory needed.
    2. Gunners - Air Support Unit

    • Purpose would be to increase survivability of Bombers; these are the guys flying in the tail-guns, etc.
    • No attack stats, but would have a defense ranging from 1.0-2.0 verses fighters, 1.0 vs. anything else.
    • Would fall under the Infantry armor class (AC) while on ground, air AC while airborne.
    • My brother and I think that it would be easiest to give these units their own flight speed, and give them the same range as bombers; otherwise, find a way to make it so they can only fly while in formation with a bomber squadron; 1 gunner per bomber.
    • Would require a Level 1 barracks and a level 2 airfield to produce.
    • Researchable after day 12, requires tactical bombers as a pre-req.
    • Up to two research levels.
    • Would have low speeds on ground; about 15-20km/h
    • If a bomber dies, a gunner dies with it.
    3. Hospital Ship - Infantry Support/Medical transport Support ship

    • Purpose would be emergency transport for heavily damaged infantry units.
    • Would be highly vulnerable to Submarines (and mines, if those are ever implemented).
    • Could carry as many as three infantry units per ship at highest level (minimum of one).
    • Decreases embarkment time if infantry are boarding the ship directly from land.
    • Defense of 2.0 against ships, 0.5 against Submarines, and 1.0 against Aircraft. No attack.
    • Infantry's morale increases more rapidly while aboard the ships (by as much as 20% a day at level 3)
    • Requires a level 1 Naval Base, a Level 1 Barracks, and a Level 1 Factory to produce.
    • Researchable at day 4, level 2 at day 14, and level 3 at day 18.
    • Speed of 40-60km/h
    • Can only disembark on friendly territory.

That's the gist so far (managed to fit it on one thread, WOOT!); Let me know what your thoughts are, and if you think there's something wrong with this idea, explain what you would change and why. Thanks!

And here it is, yeah I also after my post I also started thinking about something like this, but I was missing some components, you filled them. Good job on giving that to the detail. I like the idea and how you developed it further and I approve of it. Congratulate your brother too.

Already present. The planes already have gunners present, they have a defensive stat.

Mess with the Bill, you get the scorn!

But I would decrease the spead of the Combat engineers as they would have to carry their power tools and such which is heavy and spare parts for tanks and mechanized units. And for the Gunners I would put at least 0.5-1 offensive against aircrafts.

    LOL that line.

Oh yeah. Completely forgot about that.

Our concern was that these units could be spammed or abused if they had any attack stats.

I hadn't thought about that with the gunners. I'll have to ask my bro if he has any other ideas for an air-specific support unit based on WWII forces of the time.

As for the Hospital ships, I may make a separate thread for those, if more people like the idea.

I would say a separate hospital ship thread.

As for the gunners, try gunships. The YB-40 Flying Fortress. No bombs, all guns, pure death(but slow as a turtle)!

You just gave Jacob an idea with that one (now I just need to wait for his caffeine rush to settle; he's currently running around the house shouting "eureka!" and such. Sometimes I forget how ADHD we are...).

    I love these ideas!

I wouldn't use the hospital ships much except for RP though (If the RP community can ever sort itself out). I try to avoid sending my troops into the oceans, and when I'm fighting a naval battle, I either lose spectacularly, or win overwhelmingly.
