How would mortars, a short range indirect artillery unit, shoot down planes? That would be a one in a billion shot!
New Unit suggestion: Mortars
Mortar units. They are pretty much artillery but faster. They are also the same as infantry but with the artillery thing and the plane defense, which is at 1 to start with, and they can attack planes with .5 attack. They can be researched from day 2 and have 5 levels. (excluding the elite level) They are produced with these buildings, level 1 industrial complex, level 1 barracks, and level 2 infrastructure. What does everyone think about mortar units?
use any photo of mortars but these are the types I want
- Mortar type 1940
- Mortar type 1942

yeah, that was kinda dumb, just thinkin'!
I'd love to see a mortar unit in the game but not sure how they'll be balanced. If they're in the infantry class, they'll be topped at around 25kph and most likely outclassed by artillery. I do imagine that there will be some use at the start of the game but afterwards, can't say much.
Their lack of range would make them a melee unit so just another infantry unit, which isn't really needed, unless it was a decent offensive value and next to no defensive value.
In this game mortars would simply be a weapon used by infantry units, not a whole group of a thousand soldiers each armed with a mortar tube.

Or many mortar tubes. I do believe they are really similar to artilleries and with the new unit updates. We can stick with the artiesVorlonFCW wrote:

Mortar was used at short ranges when you could see the enemy but couldn't attack and not use artillery support(forest, hills).
