When aircrafts have a target, they get a 'next attack' info. This is useful for planning and timing which often matters for the air war.
Unfortunately the time indicated as 'next attack' does not take refueling time into account. Ofc. you can add the 15 to 30 minutes yourself, but in the heat of the battle, it can become confusing and cause mistakes.
In short, my suggestion is to add refueling time to 'next attack' for aircrafts.

Always use patrol, forget direct attack. Unless you can snapshot a unit you should always patrol. Direct attack is useless. You need to refuel for 30 minutes and while refuelling your planes are considered as convoy units and are easy to kill. Patrolling planes don't have to refuel. They can fly within their red triangle without returning to their airbase and they deal 100% attack every 30min. There's simply no reason why you would use direct attack unless you can snapshot a unit.
What about when there are multiple enemy units in the patrol area? I usually try to patrol instead, but always took that into consideration too.

Usually I try to avoid to have too many different enemy units in my patrol area. Just try to set your patrol circle there where only one stack is in it. Just move it each time slightly so that another units comes in your patrol circle and finish them off one by one.
Direct attack is far from useless. It would be more correct to say that it is situational.
The only use of direct attack is to either take out an airbase or to kill a unit in a single shot. In all other cases is patrol more efficient.
More efficient in damage/time yes. But there's more to the game than that,

During patrol time, the aircraft are left vulnerable to aa and interceptors. You'd really need to keep eyes on them and at that point it's more useful to order the direct attack to deal more damage

That's pretty much the case with all units, you need to keep an eye on them.
If you direct attack with planes while offline you are also vulnerable for AA and interceptors.
Refuelling planes have less health so each time that your planes are refuelling they are at risk.
When offline just cancel your patrol and pull your planes back behind your lines so that they can't get attacked.
If you make a stack of 10 interceptors and 10 bombers they will be well protected and you can patrol them rather safely.

Patrol is 50% every 15 minutes.
Direct attack is 100% but the defender damages first and you need to refuel.

Patrol is 50% every 15 minutes.

Indeed patrol deals 50% every 15 minutes, this makes a full patrol cycle at 100% damage every half an hour.
Taking in regard the refuelling time, direct attack has become obsolete.
25% each 15min was in the classic version where there was an attack every hour.
I wouldn't say obsolete, rather situational as was stated earlier. I can imagine scenarios where you want to kill a unit fast, before it arrives somewhere. So maybe you would patrol e.g. 4 ticks over it and then issue a direct attack for dealing the killing blow instead of waiting another 30min. Depending on your airstrip level your plane could then be used somewhere else earlier.
Another use case is if you wanna pick out specific vulnerable targets that have other armies around them (but further apart than 5px). With patrol circles you can only catch those armies on the outside, but with direct attack you may be able to snipe those on the inside.
Third use case is you already see enemy interceptors approaching when you just arrived at the target - you may not have time to wait 15min to deal your damage, so instead you may want to use direct attack to damage the target before interceptors arrive.
