Play a game for 30+ days get 4,500 gold for winning, pay $4 and get 20,000 gold?
Seems like winning should be worth a bit more.

You also work on achievements along the way that are worth gold as well.
But yes, getting a job and earning money to buy gold is going to be a much better use of your time than playing the game for it.
