Political Discussions

Politics is an off limits topic in game - this is good and something the vast majority of players can agree with (myself included)

There are many players who name themselves after current/recent political figures, I can understand why - they see the politicians as personal heroes, however, the names themselves often provoke a political 'discussion'.

Please put some thought into enforcing the no politics rule completely - including player names. Thank you for your time in reading, and hopefully responding.

Wishful thinking. I've tried that and it didn't work. About a year ago, a guy had changed his flag to the nazi flag and was dropping all kinds of gold on the map. I reported him and tried to hang in there. Two weeks later, the game ended with him still using the nazi flag and no action taken by Bytro.
I just had one guy a week ago. Reported them and they were gone just like that a day later.

That would be very gay.

What's wrong with nazi flag? This is a ww2 game! Shame on you.

Unless he was clearly trying to glorify the Nazis, he Nazi flag is an irrelevant detail and the real problem was that he was a golder.

Nazi flag represents human extermination... however, Nazis with a Nazi flag has everything to do with WW2.If there was no Nazis no WW2.

This is a WW2 game, that horrible evil flag is part of it,as long as players don't advocate the horrors of the past and verbally offend players,it would have no effect on my existence, I would still drink my coffee and have my puff and watch how the sun rise the next day.

Not the game’s fault. The Nazi flag is quite literally banned in Germany along with most Nazi thing (like Hitler). This game is based in Hamburg. No matter which way you look at it they would still have to follow laws like that.

Fair enough. Hard to blame them for that.

For political flags, usernames and such like in general though, particularly those of other totalitarian regimes, the same points still stand.

I don’t think they ban anything else. Mussolini is left alone; they specifically state fascists. Japan’s flag is actually accurate, only the military had the stripes. As long as you don’t being out the Austrian painter or drop the N-word you’ll be fine.

Free speech even hate speech. If you cant handle spicy words or images you were raised wrong. Buckle up buttercup the worlds is a scary mean place that doesn't care about you. We as a species have become soft.

No, hate speech has and will be wrong. Have you ever heard of words are just as dangerous as actions? That can be true. When we have idiotic fools out there, normalizing treating others like shit, we collapse as a society. Humanity has not become soft, but rather left its dumbass teenager age and began to finally mature. We can’t simply protect obviously wrong ideas and give them a voice because it’s “free speech.” Many horrible ideas will leach off of that to gain power and cause damage. The Nazis are just one example. Things like this should only be preserved and taught for educational, historical and entertainment (as long as people understand it’s a bad thing) purposes. We don’t need more people on the street seriously discussing horrible ideas and it being protected by free speech. I’m not gonna make this some garbage about myself but as a part of a group often persecuted I’d rather not have people who hate my people protected by law to spread their ideas even more than they already have.

I am a free speech purest. I know that words can hurt I just personally fear the consequences of a filtered society over one that is dangerously free. If a filter exists someone seeking power will push to control the filter to their advantage. In today's day and age algorithms can sway conversation to make one side appear more powerful or to make one particular side disappear completely. Its all so very dystopian.

I am by no means saying that hateful words should not hold any consequences at all. We should all be adults here. Personally I do not engage in hate speech myself but I am yet to see a set of keystrokes that tear me down or hurt me. I just don't let them. Should hate speech impact things like job opportunities or college applications maybe. If you say something that is blatantly racist or dangerous that's your choice. It's not like the platform or game company is enforcing anything that I say. If the words facilitate something dangerous or hurt another human being irl then its a law enforcement issue again not the game companies issue.

Give me the wild west over Orwell's 1984 Ministry of Truth any day.

That being said I do not ever engage in vile language myself. I wasn't raised that way. I have worked in law enforcement most of my life. To me the ability to break the law is more important than the enforcement of all laws absolutely. A society that functions willingly choosing not to break laws is the strongest and most free. When governments become so overbearing and powerful that every action is immediately enforced you are in a dangerous society.

This is way more philosophical than probably needed for COW but it is what it is.

I get what Carking is saying. I hate when people are singled out for something like race or culture I just believe that taking a few hits is a cost we pay for free dialogue. If I ran into someone acting uber Nazi or racist for example in game I would more likely go out of my way to take that player out by focusing them down. Virtue a trait fleeting in these days is so rare because people rarely get a chance to stand for whats right. If someone were to be unfairly targeting or making fun of someone I would be right there trying to defend them.

Does that help?

It depends. Obviously any nazi-adjacent and fascist Italian names are banned.

But names of other politicians from the period are often done for historical flavour, and often the line blurs with names of military figures.

I've seen players named after Churchill, De Gaulle, and Chiang. Also generals like Montgomery, Eisenhower, or Rommel. Some period dictators included also, but I think this should be acceptable in a WWII game. Saddam Hussein maybe not, he is more recent. Nazis of course not.

The thing about all of that is it is dealing in absolutes. Making sure idiots don’t say stupid things is not gonna lead to the government becoming too powerful. Thing about these keystrokes is that people, especially others can believe them. You can write things about how a certain group is like, and make someone actually think they are that way. It snowballs into a much, much worse thing. Currently the prevailing notion is honestly good. The worst we get are some unfair cancellations, much more often a crowd thing than the government. You shouldn’t be afraid of governments taking power and controlling you anyway, there are far worse things that they are doing than taking away any free speech. Games need to deal with things like this because this stuff gives a vector for these ideologies to spread like a disease. Hiding behind free speech allows them to use dog whistles and grow…

Point is, you’re not getting the Wild West or Big brother. Rather you’re gonna want to go in the middle and have less Nazis spreading.

I don't think you're giving enough credit to how much damage words can do. If you can shrug off hate speech that's excellent, but not everyone can.

There probably would have still been a WW2 (with Italy, Russia, and Japan all on the rise), but it wouldn't have been near as deadly or destructive.
Stay Sweet!

That wouldn’t be a world war. Italy was extremely weak and would collapse to France alone if needed. Japan would be only in Asia-Pacific, regional. USSR is questionable, they might stay out of war until Stalin dies and détente, or just go for it and it could then go either way.
