Provincial defenses

I would like to suggest that we be allowed to station units in a city to DEFEND from any enemy. These units would be there to fight an attack in the name of the host country.

You could put a maximum that a country can use to defend others with as a % of the total size of the armed forces of the supporting country.

So kind of like the Spanish Civil War with Nationalist Spain and Italian troops/limited amounts of German troops? Like, if I wanted to send troops to an ally without going to war myself? I know what you're getting at, but isn't it a bit easier to just trade your troops to allies and ask for them to give that unit back if it survives the war?

I believe that if you have sharemap, you troops should be able to fight inside the cities of your ally and defend them, I do believe that they get the fortress defence bonus from being station there.

I like the idea of helping allies defend, but would this scenario open games up to unbalanced play?

What if I declared war on someone, and 3 players chose to station forces in a city I was attacking? Without declaring war on each individual nation I would not be able to capture the city. I'm not sure how this could be clearly illustrated that forces are defending.

What if I wanted to station forces there without automatically defending the city? How would this be controlled?

For me this is not a good idea, considering there are trades already available, sorry but just my opinion

You can already trade units to an ally (there's already a proportional limit on that), allowing them to control them, and allies can already use the defensive bonus of forts, so I'm not really sure how much more you can add without causing unnecessary complexity
