Random Maps

I don't know if this is in the works at Bytro. But since there are already "what if" scenarios in Call of War, why not have a random map generator?

Think about this. Suppose you were looking to join a new game. Like me, you've already played dozens of matches: many in Clash of Nations, lots of World Maps, a few Road to Wars and sprinkled with a couple of Blitzkriegs where you got stabbed in the back.

Now it's time to start yet another match. You've got a couple of others going, maybe: a late game that's winding down, another late game that's rejuvenated by another back stabbing against you, and a new match on day 3 that is already pretty much over because your neighbor spent about 50,000,000 bucks on Gold.

What to do? They are all the same. The matches, the maps, the players...the drudging AI. The game dynamics are relatively unchanged between matches and the different strategies you've perfected over the past year are now rote. You need a change.

You could just walk away. You might find another game or actually come out of the darkness of your basement and rediscover the outdoors as summer is about to dawn.

Or, you could start or join a new map that is completely randomized. The nations are mixed up. The geography is screwed up. The resources are not balanced well. You have no nation choosing and your existing list of strategies aren't going to save you this time. Now, you are in a whole new world.

And this world isn't one that is carefully crafted by Bytro, balanced with resources and delicately spaced cities and coastlines and borders. Nope, you are in a map that was randomly and blindly put together by an algorithm that doesn't always work in your favor.

Finally, the challenge has returned to Call of War. Finally, the newness that drew you in has made it fresh. It makes you feel "young, as when the world was new." You form new alliances. You learn new strategies.

You open your mind.

The era of random maps must needs be done.

It is upon us all.

Let there be chaos!!!

It seemed like such a waste to destroy an entire battle station just to eliminate one man. But Charlie knew that it was the only way to ensure the absolute and total destruction of Quasi-duck, once and for all.

Good suggestion.

"I came, I saw, I conquered" Written in a report to Rome 47 B.C., after conquering Pharnaces at Zela in Asia Minor in just five days; as quoted in Life of Caesar by Plutarch; reported to have been inscribed on one of the decorated wagons in the Pontic triumph, in Lives of the Twelve Caesars, Julius, by Suetonius.
"Alea iacta est" Gaius Julius Caesar.

I like the idea!

"Rule 1, on page 1 of the book of war, is: 'Do not march on Moscow'… Rule 2 is: 'Do not go fighting with your land armies in China."
Bernard Law Montgomery, British general

I like it too

great idea

Thought-provoking, very though-provoking. An interesting idea... Although most of us 'veterans' would enjoy it, some new guys would dislike the unbalancing of countries.

I agree totally. But, maybe this type of match would have a simple disclaimer that it is not balanced and intended for more experienced gamers. Perhaps this type of match doesn't show as an option to be joined or doesn't allow to be joined by any player with a gamer level less than some arbitrary number (i.e., level 15). Also, maybe as an option in starting a new match, the match creator gets to set the minimum player rating from within a valid range (i.e., from 10 to 30).

Another thing that might work with this feature could be the ability to choose from a few trending characteristics of the new match (similar to the ideas behind a few of the controls in generating a new random map in Civilization). Those characteristics would need to be listed in the map features section of a match so that other players can decide whether they want to join or not.

Actually, I've just had another thought. If Bytro were to implement a minimum level needed feature to join a match then they could also add a maximum level for beginner matches to keep uber-veterans from seeking out the newbies for a fish-in-the-barrel shooting to boost scores. New players need to be in a match where they are incubated into the Call of War way of life and not thrust against a vastly superior foe by day three.

Hmmm, a good suggestion.

*frowns...a tear drops to the floor.

Civilization III and IV were in my top 5 all-time favorite games ever.

Only Sid Meier's Colonization, Star Wars Rebellion, and Call of War share the list with them and Civilization III is probably the first position in my list.

But that's just me.

BTW, close runners up include: Transport Tycoon, Valve's Orange Box - Team Fortress, Wing Commander Armada, X-Wing, Master of Orion I & II & III, Sim City 2000 & 3000, Civ II, Starcraft I, Heroes of Might and Magic II, Dune II & 2000, Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri &Alien Crossfire, and 1701/1602/1503 series.

Honorable mentions include: Command & Conquer I & II, C&C Red Alert 1 & 2, The Sims I & II, Caesar III, and Warcraft II.

I guess I'm a big fan of the following studios (most of which are now defunct): Blizzard, Westwood, LucasArts, Sierra, 3DO, Maxis, Sunflowers, and -- most importantly -- Microprose. I should also mention the one that ruined them all, Electronic Arts, which actually produced a few good non-sports titles after acquiring all the others.

I am sure that many of these titles and the great companies that made them are totally unknown to the younger audiences. And that's too bad for them. Many of these classic games were purchased d and owned by a user in the traditional method of acquiring games.

And I currently have three games: Call of War, Hearts of Iron 3, and Minecraft. And I only play two. I'll let you guess which ones.

Hm....I don't know the second but the first guess is obvious. I've heard of Hearts of Iron but never checked it out. Minecraft -- as a concept -- seems entirely foreign to good game-play to me. But I've never tried it so the validity of my opinion on that is -- at best -- subjective.

Yeah, it's Hearts of Iron. I just attempted to take over the world as Luxembourg– a feat I've seen done on YouTube before– but I failed in my invasion of America after I had joined the Axis and it went downhill from there.

Minecraft was fun. When I was 11. There's this one server that I made millions of in-game dollars on, but it got boring after a while.

HOI (3) is great for some, but personally I found the interface just horrible and the battle mechanics hard to understand. Tried 3 or 4 games before I threw in the towel with various B and C rate nations like Italy and Argentina. Sure you can set things on 'auto', but dunno...

@ Diabolical: Ive played a few of those games, especially Dune has a warm place in my heart as the best bookseries of all time and the first 'modern' strategy game.

Might buy HOI4 though to give it another chance, I like complex strategy games:)
