It might be a complex system, but I had this idea for national morale similar to popularity that would affect military performance. This is open to criticism and discussion, but I have a few things in mind. If you lose your capital, soldiers have a chance to defect or desert, and if they don't then their performance is hindered by 50%. I also think that the province your army is stationed in has low morale, then the garrison will perform accordingly. Overall, if your national morale is low then all units will have a performance drop under say, 70% morale. Kind of ties in with more penalties for losing a capital. I am not passionate about these ideas, but I like discussion and debates.

Maybe just have it tied to national morale and victories or defeats in battle. Depending on your national morale, you may deal more or less damage. As for battles, if you lose a certain net portion of your army to an enemy, you’ll deal less damage and vice versa if you kill a certain number of enemies (dependent on your army size). It seems simple enough. Perhaps you can also pay your soldiers more money to increase morale? Maybe propaganda offices can also increase morale within a province or radius.

How many provinces or VP you lose a day could be the determining factor, even how many units you lose. There are so many ideas to go along with this, maybe espionage actions to assassinate generals which decreases morale or army performance, maybe have larger battles be more significant to morale, etc.

All excellent ideas! Core lands would definitely be very important. I’d argue that losing your cores and land you’ve held longer should have a bigger effect, and if you lose all of the former you have a permanent debuff (along with a huge buff if it’s liberated). This could be a very fun system to implement..

I agree, the in-game morale system has so much potential. What I think makes it lead to so many ideas is because it can realistically fit into all aspects of the game like production, army performance, capital loss penalty, expansion, espionage, etc.

Plus the added benefit of was actually having an effect on those fighting it.
