SPA is a great bit of kit, used by al sides in the war in various forms. For those of you who don't know what SPA is, in its most basic form, its an artillery gun (or howitzers) mounted onto a tracked (or wheeled) vehicle. Many German types consisted of old Panzer II being rebuilt for a new role.
Within this category, I'd like to mention Assault guns, which can be used in the same role to aid infantry moving up.
I'd love to see SPA in the game, it would work like artillery, but have a shorter range, similar damage and of course, be more mobile. However, its going to cost a lot- maybe akin to that of a medium tank. It should also be noted that these things had terrible armour, and if put into the game, would be at the mercy of tanks and AT would destroy them in minutes
.
So what do you think?

Well, the two was a light tank, so maybe between a light and a medium for price?
I like the idea, I think I suggested the idea a couple time before. Although assault guns and arty are different, an assault gun is like the Stug or Stuh, for busting bunkers and such. The arty is for supporting assaults from further back rather alongside infantry. You can tell which is which by the armor if you can't tell by the gun.

I like the idea too. But wouldn't it be overpowered? One of the biggest downsides of artilery is that it's slow, wouldn't adding speed to the arty make it a bit overpowered? Unless it kept it's air vulnerability and had a increased price; if well balanced it would be a great mid game support unit.

It would have no defensive features whatsoever.

It should have the ability to defend itself from infantry, to a point. They do have enough armor to protect themselves from bullets and grenades, and the crews can fight back.

Yes, I suppose those vehicles would have built in machineguns, but they would probably succumb to enemy armor easily.

Nail on the head. SPA became every T-34s dream: easy kills.

I guess so, but I think the American SPG's only really had an MG on it. Maybe some Brits too but that is irrelevant at the moment.

No but you could load HE, depress the gun as far it would go and then fire. Problem is while you are reloading you will then get rushed. Although some assault guns, could I think load cansiter rounds. Also the StuG was a assault gun as was Hetzer. I can just see people spamming those things. Stating either Hetzer is gonna Hetz, always. Or I didn't choose the StuG life the StuG life choose me. Or StuG life best life.

That is fun. What about(this is a new one I just made up) 'Watch out, a Priest!'. Besides, people would get bored of it fast. Also, we are all pretend adults here, right?

I can't see much difference between towed and SP artillery , on the level of this game. About the only difference would be SPA perhaps having better speed through hills and forests maybe. And it would have a lower road/plains speed.
As to SPA gun range , no, there is no difference in range for most SP's of WWII, and their towed counterparts, except for the British Sexton and Bishop. IIRC

Game wise the SPA have better speed and armor ideal to bring in for siege while the slower guns are left for defense.
It's cost would be a cross from an artillery to a medium tank, and the tech line would meet to research, and should need a level 2 infra to build it.
It's a nice addition but it's attack value is going to be the same as the artillery, the only difference is it's being used before attacking while the slower gun is for defense or it will be destroyed either counter-battery Fire, or being chased by faster units.
It's quite similar with the tank destroyer idea
AT-TD
Arty-SPA
The katyusha rocket artillery of the soviets are classified as a SPA because it does not have to be towed, it was also classified as a rocket artillery.
Along with the added armor the SPA also have some defense againts infantry, I forgot to mention that. With the exception of the katyusha which is an ordinary truck with rockets.

Indeed , same as for TD - AT , SPG would have more speed, health and defensive values compared to normal Arty , ofcourse it would cost alot more and take more time to build making normal Arty better suited for defensive roles
