Ship names

When you produce a ship and then name it, the name is just forgotten, it never appears again in the game. I think an interesting feature would be that you can see the ship name when you select it. Also in the newspaper it would be cool to have the ship name appear in combat reports: "Battleship Gneisenau has been defeated by 34th naval bomber squadron", "Submarine U21 has been destroyed by destroyer HMS Acasta" (these are just examples)

Why?!
I think they simply forgot it existed, because it was in the classic world at wars. I loved it, had a list of ship names in the fleet details, you could see other player ship names too. Sometimes these could be... not so nice. But I never actually ran into any rudely named ones that I can recall. i'd like to see it return, otherwise, take away the option to name carriers and battleships, its pointless....
In CoW Classic, Battleships and carriers (as well as Railroad guns) could be named, and whenever the unit, or unit stack containing the unit, destroyed another unit, the newspaper would mention the name of the ship/rr gun. Pretty sure that they still did that in 1.5, although I haven't seen it yet since 2.0

Unit names dont show up anymore because people were giveing offensive names.
People were giving their ships rule-breaking names like "Sumpreme Chancellor H!tler" and the like. Obviously it's a direct offense per the CoW tos/game rules. So the devs probably just didn't want to keep worrying about mass infractions.

You can still give ships names (when you order one, directly; not with HC build queue or when building multiple at once) and those names will show up in the newspaper when they destroy something.

From today's paper in my current game:

1:49 pm Wyndham: The 41st Tank Destroyer Brigade (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) (GY 41) has been destroyed by the 45th Battleship Flotilla (SUMATRA) "Weno" after heavy bombardment.

funniely (if that is even a word lol) enough, if not removed, the name onlz appears, when the Unit is killed... the name will be shown in the newspaper... a bit... stupid actually... But I was wondering too... but yeah.. it is Bytro doing Bytro stuff ^^ (not offensive...)

Bring this back, would love to recreate the Bismarck in games

I believe it does prompt you to enter a name when you add a ship to your build queue. I donโ€™t play with carriers or battleships often, but do remember this.

Actually I'm playing a full fleet round with Sumatra. Have left battleships out of my sets for a while, but included them now and am very pleased with the way they can keep enemy troops from entering coastal areas - at all.

I named six battleships Fuji, Yashima, Shikishima, Hatsuse, Asahi, and Mikasa in 2.0 and the names don't appear on the unit stats. Are they still there?

The names only appear in the newspaper.

I wish that they could still appear in the unit desc. they did in 1.5

I know, that's what I was talking about. I just found out from you they don't, pity.

Bruh this was a thing even back in 1.5, its just gone again.

Granted its undertsandable that a number of folks used this to make extremely lewd or inappropriate names for their ships, and like 90% of players never bothered changing it from the random province name defaults.

But like...I always loved spamming navy above all, because I'm a guy who lives near the ocean. I prided myself in thinking of ridiculously long, complicated, and posh-sounding ship names that were historically relevant. I miss it. Yes, they show up in the newspaper again, but when I'm usually running massive fleets of 20-30 battleships total I can't exactly remember all of my ship names...and then I have to find some random AI with a million subs to intentionally provoke so I can quietly get rid of the accidental clone, which wastes resources, lives, and is not exactly the most diplomatically friendly way to scrap a ship...

My memory is fuzzy since I stopped putting effort into ship names a while ago since 2.0 came out and names disappeared from unit info, but the last game before then I completely stomped everyone else with massive battlefleets that literally just blockaded every single path connected to hostile land. I ended up losing only two battleships that game and by the end I was disappointed to find out we also lost the ability to trade armies (my ally didn't have much of a navy and I was literally burning several nations' worth of fuel per day to run my fleet). I dumped a good chunk of the older ships in a corner of the map because I ran out of fuel to make more escort craft to keep them safe, yet I'd already literally killed every single hostile ship in the game.

That game I was playing as Brazil, rolling with a restoration of the Brazilian Empire. Don't remember all the names I used but here's a few just for the absolute flair we could be going with right now if we could still have ship names appear on unit details...

* Imperatriz Isabel de Braganca

* Imperador Pedro I

* Imperador Pedro II

* Joao IV

* Maria I de Braganca

* Dom Gaston

* Admiral Cochrane

* Amazonas

* Maria II da Gloria de Braganca

* Imperatriz Maria Leopoldina

* Imperatriz Teresa Cristina

* Dona Januaria de Braganca

* Dom Afonso

* Lea Aurea

* Imperatriz Amelia

Yes, I put way too much effort into ship names.

Heh, I can imagine the occasional confusion amongst the sailors... "I was going to serve on the Rio Grande... ah no... the other one!"

Railway guns and battleships can still be named. I would also like to see their names in the army description.

Two ships of the Russian fleet at Tsushima were called Oryol; a battleship and a hospital ship. I wonder how that affected things.

Yes, I put way too much effort into ship names.

I like the Admiral Cochrane.

I tend to name mine after historic battleships of my played country; e.g. Mikasa, Asahi, Iron Duke, etc.

I name my ships with a warrior, King or Governor of my played country.

Felipe II, Juan Ponce de Leรณn, El Cid...

Many people just don't change battleship's name. So boaring.

I built two during an America: Homefront round to breach the walls of Minneapolis. Their names were Grond and Thomas the Tank Engine.

East Montana by the way.

Rather than making up names yourself, Bytro could have a list of suggested names in a database then randomly assign them per country.

Like for Germany Tirpitz, Bismarck etc.

This prevents stupidly inappropriate names.

That's exactly how it works. You open up the Naming Menu and a name (randomly generated from a database list ) is in there already, you have the option of modifying it and making it personal.

There will be some who make a conscious choice to be improper, and they should be dealt with appropriately. That should not rob the rest of the folks their freedoms or range of options, should it?
