Just as J used to be incorporated into I as the consonantal form, U used to be the vowel pronounciation of V. Make the sounds with your lips and it makes sense (of course u in isolation is pronouced yu). The first use of a modified v to represent the vowel dates from the 14th century and became common 150 years later.
Also, might as well call Japan Zipang and Australia Java Major in this case.
