It's rough to play as Canada. Food shortages cause you to sell excess iron and rare metals for a profit and reallocate the funds to grain and food.
However, if you do manage to conquer the Central USA and Southern USA, you can break even with grain.
Still, this being another person echoing my feelings about the Americas being a bit scarce on food earns a 'Like' from me. 
Extra food would be added competition!
