I never really understood the reason the population was never given a combined total. I would like to know how many citizens I rule over. Maybe even add a core population number, non-core, and total. Just a suggestion. I don't think it would serve a real function, but it would be nice.
Each country's population is given a total count; you just need to know where to look. On the diplomacy relations big board, if you click on the "i" button next to the player's name, it will provide the current total population of all provinces held by the player's country (among other things).
